Frequently Asked Questions
3D printing is additive manufacturing that takes computer models, and turns them into real, physical things. It takes plastic filament (PLA or ABS), melts it down into a thin layer onto a surface, moves up, and lays another layer on top – kind of like a hot glue gun affect. After layer upon layer, you are left with an an object that is very durable and long lasting.
- A digital 3D image created on a computer is analyzed and divided into layers, as if sliced horizontally.
- Each “slice” is produced in succession on the 3D printer, layering on top of each other to gradually produce a whole object.
- There are many different processes that can produce an object in this way, some involving liquid resin, powders or thermoplastic materials.
- It depends on the specific 3D printer you are using. Each has a maximum build volume.
- Typical maximum size for personal 3D printers: 150-300mm per side
Large prints typically take a VERY LONG TIME to complete, often hours or even days. - Large 3D models can be split into pieces, printed and assembled into a larger object if they don’t fit into a specific 3D printer.
- Personal 3D printers typically support PLA and ABS plastics or similar plastics.
- PLA is biodegradable and made from corn, but is brittle.
- ABS is made from petroleum and is strong.
- Other experimental materials are possible, such as mixing wood, nylon or metal particles into PLA plastic and certain plastics such as nylon, HIPS and others.
- Inception 3D & Nexus 3D prints with Dual Material.
Each 3D printer includes Matter Control software to drive the printer itself.
We pride the Volution 3D as being the best value personal 3D printer in the market. With a competitive price point, automatic leveling, big build volume, and 50 micron print quality, it sets itself apart from the rest. The Nexus 3D are full featured smart 3D printers with powered by the Matter Control Software, which allows you to print directly from your PC/Laptop to your 3D printer and monitor the progress of a print job. These two machines have tons of great additional features like touch screen for starting prints, changing settings, and monitoring your print job. They have easy plug and play features like filament run out detection that tells you if your printer needs more material. They also have automatic leveling, removable print platforms, and allow you to print with all the open source materials in the marketplace.
